I passed my car test in 2001, and, realising a day later that it was a lot more convenient than the bike, left the poor ZX-6R to fester in the garage, unloved, unused and badly maintained.
Hence, every time I come to use it, I have a real struggle to get the thing going. Conjure up images of me and my mate pushing it down the hill to try and get a bump start. Conjure up subsequent images of me pushing it back up the hill after the failure of said bump start.
Luckily, I'd looked at it a few weeks ago and realised that the battery needed charging, so when the car disaster arose last week, I was pretty sure that the bike would be available to standby.
But its three years since I last rode it to any extent, and there's an awful lot I'd forgotten :
- I'd forgotten how to turn corners - that I shouldn't touch the brakes at corners - how to go over roundabouts - that I should watch out for spilled diesel at roundabouts - that you have to lean into the cross winds - that this gets fucked up when you overtake lorries - that your visor gets covered with dead insects - that's its all too easy to open the throttle and be doing a ton, yes, the speedo does go up to 170 for a reason - that you should always wear a scarf.
Mostly, I'd forgotten just how cold it is when you're doing 85 miles on the bike first thing in the morning.

Recent ramblings
I vaguely remember a footy commentary from the start of the nineties - it went to penalties and delayed the start of the next show which was the early Mark & Lard vehicle, 'Hit The North'. Rather than just wait for the show, Mark decided to join in with the commentary and spent the entire penalty shoot-out discussing Man City with the sports fella (who may have been Mike Ingham)
Black Francis announced the Pixies breakup on that Radio 5 show.
Anyway, his show was quite obviously the star vehicle of the station, and when it shifted and became 5 Live, his transfer to Radio 1 and his move to a nightly show was inevitable and welcome.
I used to listen to that show every night, I remember taping the show where he and Lard played their Tindersticks party songs and asked the band what they thought of them. "We thought they were really funny," said one of the musicians, "But Stuart (the viciously lampooned singer) wants to kill you." I don't know if it's still there but if you hunt on google long enough, you'll find a resource about his old show. Yes - people didn't just record it - people built internet sites about it.
And then he moved to the breakfast show and to the early afternoons and, unable to listen to the radio at work, we drifted apart.
Until now.
He's on Radio 2. He's lost Lard, but he's got the late slot. "If you don't like this song, you don't like music," he says as the intro to New Order's True Faith fades in as his first record. His next two are the new Belle & Sebastian and Killing Moon by Echo & The Bunnymen.

Tomorrow sees the Bristol Comics thing which, if last year was anything to go by, would see me attempting to up my blood alcohol content to dangerous levels. This year however, I have a wedding reception on Saturday evening and a wedding on the Bank Holiday Monday, both of which involve driving and therefore require a level of relative sobriety.
That's a bit boring.
Ade Brown has corralled help from a load of comics pros and fans, and has a resultant magazine, launching at the con, called Just 1 Page. 5 quid does sound like a lot of moolah, but it's 72 pages long, is really rather good, and the proceeds from it are going to charity. I've read the magazine and, disregarding the charity aspect, it would be well worth the five quid anyway.
I'm only telling you all this because Ade is a mate, it's a good product for a good cause, and because I know that a few of the people reading this are comics fans who won't be going to the con.
